How to Follow your Heart in Chinese Medicine

February 14, 2017

It’s Valentine’s Day and that means everything to do with Hearts!

Little hearts, BIG HEARTS, pink hearts, red hearts, chocolate hearts.. So, I figured I’d follow that theme and pass along a little ancient Chinese medicine wisdom pertaining to the most important… the ‘Emperor of all Organs’.. your Heart!

In Chinese medicine, every organ is linked together in what we call a Meridian System. In fact, most organs and their meridian can be considered one and the same…So the best way to understand any organ and its properties, is to be familiar with the Meridian’s Pathway.

The Heart Meridian of Hand-Shaoyin originates in the Heart, emerges and spreads over the Heart System to include the tissues and blood vessels surrounding the heart, travels downward from the heart across the diaphragm and connects to the small intestine. One branch of the main meridian separates from the Heart System and ascends alongside the throat to the face where it joins the Eye System, the tissues connecting the eyes with the brain. Another branch from the heart, enters the lung, emerges under the arm, and runs along the medial aspect of the arm to the tip of the little finger.

Once we can visualize and follow this Qi flow through the Heart, we can understand the top three ways that the heart influences our Health!

1. Vitality & Strength
Similar to Western medicine, Chinese medicine believes that a healthy Heart is essential for proper supply of blood to all tissues and organs of the body… When you have adequate blood supply and your circulation is good, you will be full of Vitality!… but if your heart is weak, you will have poor constitution and a lack of strength.

Acupuncture points along the Heart Meridian of Hand-Shaoyin can help Strengthen the Heart’s Vital Energy & Increase Blood Circulation.

2. Radiant Glow
As the Heart governs blood and controls the blood vessels, the state of the heart’s energy is reflected in your Complexion!.. When the blood is abundant and the heart is strong, your face will be Rosy & Lustrous … If your heart is weak and circulation is impaired, your facial complexion will look dull and pale.

Acupuncture points along the Heart Meridian of Hand-Shaoyin can help to Increase Circulation & Brighten the Complexion.

3. Healthy Mind & Spirit
The state of the heart and its blood can have an effect on your emotional state. If your Heart is healthy, you will think clearly, be emotionally balanced, have a good memory and enjoy restful sleep!… If the Heart-Blood is deficient, you may have mental and emotional issues such as depression, anxiety, poor memory and insomnia.

Acupuncture points along the Heart Meridian of the Hand-Shaoyin and Chinese herbal teas can help Nourish Blood & Calm the Spirit.

“The very center of your heart is where life begins…the most beautiful place on earth.” ~ Rumi
